Autorenportrait
Emma Orczy, born as Emma Magdalena Rosalia Maria Josefa Barbara Orczy on September 23, 1865, in Tarnaörs, Hungary, was a celebrated author and playwright, primarily recognized for pioneering the historical adventure and suspense genres. Orczy moved to London with her family in 1880, where she later attended the West London School of Art and then the Heatherley School of Fine Art. It was during this time that she met her future husband, Montague Barstow, with whom she collaborated on several of her works. Orczy's writing career truly began to flourish after the moderate success of her stage works. Her most enduring creation, 'The Scarlet Pimpernel,' first introduced as a play in 1903 and subsequently novelized in 1905, marked a distinct turning point, establishing her as a master of the adventure narrative with a penchant for blending history with romance and intrigue. Though 'The Scarlet Pimpernel' remains her most famous work, Orczy wrote numerous other novels, including 'The Laughing Cavalier' (1913) and its sequel 'The First Sir Percy' (1921), both prequels to The Scarlet Pimpernel series, set in Holland during the 17th century. These works further exemplify Orczy's literary style characterized by vivid characterization, meticulous historical research, and a proclivity for the themes of honor, loyalty, and heroism. Orczy continued to write prolifically until her death on November 12, 1947, leaving behind a legacy that has greatly influenced the adventure and spy fiction genres.
